Marriage counselling in India: cost, how to choose, and what happens
9 min read · Updated · By the ELOVIYA team
Marriage counselling in India has no fixed tariff. Listed prices seen in November 2026 were about ₹3,500 to ₹4,000 for a couple session at two providers we checked, and one senior specialist listed ₹6,000 to ₹15,000; check directly. Before booking, ask about qualifications and couples training. Clinical psychologists can be checked on the Rehabilitation Council of India's register, while counsellors have no single national register. A first session usually means each of you describing what's happening and what you want.
Who you may meet, and what the titles mean
Search results for this topic are dominated by providers selling sessions, and titles are used loosely. 'Marriage counsellor', 'relationship expert' and 'life coach' don't tell you what training someone has. These are the distinctions we find most useful, and they match our wider guide to finding professional support.
- Clinical psychologist: must be registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Trained to assess and treat mental-health difficulties. Some also do couples work, but the qualification doesn't by itself mean specific couples training.
- Psychiatrist: a medical doctor registered with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council, who can diagnose and prescribe. Useful if depression, anxiety or another condition is part of the picture.
- Counsellor or couples therapist: there's no single national register. Many are well trained. You need to ask about their degree, supervised practice and couples training.
- Coach: may be helpful for some goals, but coaching is not therapy and isn't meant for treating mental-health conditions or for working through abuse. Ask directly what they're trained in.
How to check an RCI registration
This takes about five minutes and it's entirely reasonable to do. Nobody with a real registration should be offended. RCI keeps the Central Rehabilitation Register, and its norms list clinical psychologists among the registered categories. Registration runs for seven years, so an old certificate may not settle it.
- Ask for their full name as registered and their CRR number. It's a normal question.
- Go to RCI's search page at rciregistration.nic.in/rehabcouncil/Select_Search.jsp. You can search by CRR number or name, or by state, category and qualification.
- Check that the name and category match, and that the registration looks current. If you can't find them, ask them to help you, since spellings vary.
- For a psychiatrist, check their medical registration with the National Medical Commission or their State Medical Council.
- For a counsellor who isn't on the register, ask where they studied, who supervised them, and what couples training they've done. Being absent from the RCI register isn't by itself a warning sign, but describing yourself as a clinical psychologist without being on it is worth questioning.
What it costs: listed prices we found
These are listed prices seen in November 2026. Check directly, because they change and some pages disagree with themselves. We name these pages only so you can see where the numbers came from. We haven't assessed these providers and aren't recommending them.
- PsychiCare (online): ₹3,000 for a 60-minute session. A 90-minute couple session is listed at both ₹3,500 and ₹4,000 on the same page.
- Emocare (Chennai and online): ₹3,500 when both partners attend, which covers 30 minutes with each and an hour together; ₹1,999 for one partner for 75 minutes.
- Dr Prerna Kohli's practice: her page lists her own sessions from ₹6,000 to ₹15,000.
- The same page gives a general guide, which is one practitioner's estimate and not a survey: ₹500 to ₹2,000 for online platforms and new counsellors, ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 for mid-level therapists, ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 for senior clinical psychologists, and ₹0 to ₹500 for NGOs, government services and trainee-run clinics.
Thinking about the total, not the session
Ask what the fee covers, because a 'session' may be 50, 60 or 90 minutes, and it may be per person or per couple. Ask how many sessions they typically suggest, and how often. Then multiply: weekly sessions for three months at ₹3,000 come to about ₹36,000. It's better to know that before you start than to stop midway because of money. Be careful with large prepaid packages before you've met the person. Some providers offer small discounts for them, and it's reasonable to try one or two sessions first.
If cost is the barrier, public hospitals with psychiatry or clinical psychology departments, teaching institutions and NGOs may charge much less, though waits may be longer. In Bengaluru, a 2016 news report described a Marital Enrichment Clinic at the NIMHANS Centre for Well-Being, for couples with mild problems. That report is old, so check with NIMHANS whether it's still running and what it costs. Tele-MANAS (14416) offers free mental-health support, though not couples counselling as such.
What usually happens in sessions
Formats vary and there's no standard. Many therapists start with one or two longer conversations about what brought you, how you met, what's changed and what each of you hopes for. Some see each partner alone for part of the time. Many consider that good practice, in part because it gives each person a private chance to mention fear or safety concerns. After that, sessions usually focus on the pattern of how you talk and fight, and often include something to try at home.
Good sessions may feel uncomfortable, and that's different from feeling judged. A counsellor shouldn't be deciding who's right, or telling you to stay or leave. Online sessions are common. If you share a home with family, it's worth working out where you can talk without being overheard.
Questions to ask, and what to be cautious about
A short call or message before booking can tell you a lot. Reasonable questions:
- What is your training, and how much of your work is with couples?
- What do you do if one partner is afraid of the other?
- Who sees my notes, and would anything I say be shared with my spouse or family?
- Do you work with couples in our situation, such as a joint family, an inter-faith marriage or a same-sex relationship?
- How will we know whether this is working, and when would you suggest stopping?
“Before we book, could you share your qualifications and RCI number, if you're registered? I'd also like to know what couples training you've done.”
“Would you see us separately at any point? I'd like to understand how that works, and what stays private.”
Be cautious about these
Be careful with anyone who promises to save your marriage, says it will work in a set number of sessions, or pushes you to reconcile for the sake of the family or to prepay a long package straight away. The same goes for anyone who takes one partner's side after meeting you once, or who won't tell you their qualifications.
If you're afraid of your partner, or have been hurt, couples counselling may not be the safe first step. Many therapists suggest individual support first. Our safety page lists free, confidential lines, and a helpline can help you think through what comes next.

Questions
How much does marriage counselling cost in India?
There's no set fee. Listed prices seen in November 2026 were about ₹3,500 to ₹4,000 for a couple session at two providers we checked, and one senior specialist listed ₹6,000 to ₹15,000. NGOs and public services may charge much less. Check directly, including the session length.
How do I check if a psychologist is RCI registered?
Ask for their CRR number, then search it or their name on RCI's register at rciregistration.nic.in. Check that the name and category match and that it looks current. Counsellors may not appear there, as there's no single national register for them, so ask about their training instead.
Who is the best marriage counsellor near me?
We don't recommend individual practitioners. A good match usually means real training, experience with couples, a clear approach to safety and privacy, and someone you both feel able to talk to. It's fine to try one or two sessions and switch if it doesn't feel right.
Can marriage counselling work if only one spouse attends?
Going alone can still help you understand your part of the pattern and decide what you want. It's different from couples work, because the therapist hears only one side. If your spouse refuses, it's often still a reasonable step. Say that you're there about the marriage when you book.
